Interview with Zhuangyue Xiao
Interview with Zhuangyue Xiao, a concept designer from China
Hi, Zhuangyue Xiao, thanks for agreeing to do this interview! Let’s start out with a bit of general background: tell us a few words about yourself.
I am pleased to give the interview for you. My name is Zhuangyue Xiao, you can call me X.tiger. I am a cheerful person, love adventure and travel. I grew up on Chinese painting, good art and design. China has more than conceptual design movies and games. I founded the CG art educational institution in China, hoping to spread CG education across the country.
Let’s talk about your CG background. I think it will be interesting to our readers to know how it all began. How did you take your first artistic steps to reach where you are today? When did you start doing digital painting? What was the reason of choosing this occupation?
My college major was new media art, I started to work in the CG industry from the University, following a number of animation and gaming companies . After graduation I successfully entered the country’s largest gaming company. After working inside the industry, and gradually started to work independently, and become the project leader. That is all CG background I have. I like this job, because the concept of design can help me to realize my expression of art, I can go through the conceptual design to express my view of the world, to shape the virtual world I imagined, I feel it is a very cool thing, so I’m in love with this profession.
Where do you get the ideas and inspiration for your works?
As the saying goes, art comes from life. I agree with this sentence. As a concept designer, you need a lot of knowledge, and this knowledge is often the common sense in life. I learned a lot of content, including construction, makeup, beauty, fashion design, world history, physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology,, geography, and even poetry and literature, etc. I think all this is a very important source of inspiration for the concept designer. So I also learn through knowledge of the past, coupled with targeted imagination to create works.
What do you think is the best work you’ve ever produced?
I think the best work is an ability to achieve the best at the skills, and receive attention and recognition. I have many interests, I like art, astronomy, basketball, and singing, so astronomers had dreams of becoming basketball players or singers, but now I do best in the art, can be considered to achieve the ideal.
Are you a perfectionist? Does it take you long to achieve that final perfect image you are happy with?
In life I am not an absolute perfectionist, the attitude of my life is more casual, a steady stream of surprises and happiness. But artistically I’m a perfectionist, I am demanding and sometimes even forget to eat and sleep. When working at a project in the company , I will make repeated changes to get the perfect image out of my mind, I and the team will feel very happy with that process of implementation.
What work do you enjoy more: personal or commercial projects? What kind of work are you doing now?
I like the diversity of life and work, but not spending long time for the same work. So sometimes like a creative person I like personal work, sometimes I like to complete commercial projects with a team. I am now in my studio working at the creation of a new pre-conceptual design of online games and supervising a student to complete a virtual project.
Have you any tricks and your own “know-hows” which you gained with experience during your work? Are there any skills and techniques you’d like to acquire?
Yes, in course of time I managed to accumulate a lot of “tricks” in order to improve efficiency, and cooperation among colleagues I am working with. Such as how to let out their work quickly and very effective, how to let people more easily achieve the effect I wanted, and so on.
How do you manage to combine your personal life and work? Do you have any hobbies? Is it easy for you to find the time for your family, friends?
I do not separate personal life and work. I think the life of an artist is different from other people, artists live with the inspiration to work for life and sense of achievement to work the whole life. I am have many like-minded friends, not just from the artistic circles, there are many other circles such as civil servants, IT personnel, businessmen, managers, etc., because I feel more contact with outsiders who can give me better understanding of society and help me to enrich my world view.
Do you have any dream as an artist? How would you like to see your career evolve in the next few years?
My dream is simple: do yourself! Because a person lives in the world where the time is very limited, I hope to do my favorite things, with my ability to help others, with the rest of my life to explore the world. As for career development, in the near future I plan to have more projects , have a good team.
What can you say to inspire those newbies who are just starting to work in CG?
I would say much. I think as the industry leader in CG, we have a responsibility to the healthy functioning of the industry, so the education is very important. CG art world has begun to show the flourishing state of the market, a lot of new people flock to this seemingly “shortcut” so-called art, and so frequent is occurrence of various problems and phenomena.
