Making of Worship

In this tutorial I will show you some of my creative approaches. I hope you will like this tutorial.

Introduction

In this tutorial, I will describe the creative process of this picture to you. Next I’ll show the whole creative approaches and some of my creative thinking process. Hope that this tutorial can do some help to you.

Step 1

The first step, to paint a black and white draft, you must have an idea in your mind at first, and then step by step starting from the composition to restore your mind, may not get there in one step, or half-way there will be a new idea, it doesn’t matter, as if it will do some help to the picture. A special attention to the processing depth of field, things which are far away, should have weaker contrast and light, and things which are nearby have stronger contrast and shade, so as to reflect the sense of space. The contrast of light and shade is important in drawing.

STEP 2

After determined the composition probably, I started to make certain the various elements (mountains, rivers) of the picture slowly. It would be able to express something what you want to draw . Notice the light and shade contrast to distinguish your foreground from background, lengthen the distance between mountains.

STEP 3

Soon I found my composition is a little bit too common, without features , so I changed prospects into a cave. This put the original scene which is only one space into two spaces, inside and outside, and vision in the backdrop of the hole also appears to be more distant. It is particularly emphasized sometimes you should dare to overthrow your old ideas, to have a variety of changes, so it can create to achieve the best results.

STEP 4

Since I’ve changed the composition, the outlook is a little dim, so I draw light into the feeling of the cave, so that the environment is more reasonable. Create a new layer, attributes to “soft”, the choice of soft-edged brush to draw general effect, and then erased with a rubber tool to adjust to the state as you see fit.

STEP 5

Then start drawing the details, I first deal with the projection of the mountain in the water, the water reflection and the junction of mountain and water is the best place to effect the performance of the river, so focusing on this. I chose a river photo material to cover the picture in a suitable angle, layer properties to “overlay.” Next is about the performance of mountains and caves, where I used a piece of the rock texture mapping, image – adjust – decolorize, using the “overlay” mode. In the conceptual design of material used inside the image is very important, so in the creative process to try to search for whatever you can to the material.

STEP 6

Then start drawing color, create a new layer, attributes to “soft.” Brush with soft edges used to draw. Warmer parts of the sky to take the yellow high-brightness, water has taken dark green cave, press the light to spread a ballpark, and then use the eraser tool to adjust. In addition to the performance of color like this in addition to enhanced picture contrast of light and shade, so I can feel flesh air now.

STEP 7

Since composition, light and shadow, color tend to be basically determined, it is now beginning to draw all the local details, but not to complete each place in one step, but I should make sure their progresses are the same, the whole progress gets further. To paint the mountains and rocks from far to near, let them feel more reasonable by using light. Through analysis of light and shade to do painting deeply.

STEP 8

Under a simple drawing on the sky and the distant peaks of the building shape, to keep steps one by one from far to near. Painting the large wall around the left side first, because I think a big Buddha should be there, the question will be handled later.

STEP 9

Let’s start to paint the Buddha! First, I should find some brief. I choose this picture to reference. Stretch the Buddha to let it sit on the left rock and make it of stone. I use the same method( painting cave and the mountain)to draw that portray the shape firstly and paste the stone picture secondly. Then paint the details.

STEP 10

After the addition of a Buddha statue, I begin to deal with the question how the Buddha statue can be inlay to the rock wall, let the statue into the wall inside, do not particularly detailed, it would be able to show spatial relationships on it. Also spread to the whole picture, each place and then delve into a level. I also put a boat on the shore.

STEP 11

To the previous step so far, the picture is only rock and water, feeling rather monotonous, so I add a variety of different textures of things, such as statues or two old cloth, a few boats with a few people, so the story line come out the screen, a group of people, two people were put into a cage which about to be thrown into the river, opposite these is a Buddha. It’s more likely to say that ignorance of human life to do the human sacrifice.

STEP 12

The final step is to adjust the picture, we create a “color balance layer” to modify the dark part of the picture to reddish and purplish and the bright part to yellowish. This is the way I used to adjust the picture. If you don’t like these two kinds of color, there are many other choices. But what I would like to say here is that this adjusting step is very important, and the picture quality will be improved to a new level if you’ve done well.

To summarize, in the drawing procedure, it is normal that what you thought may differ from what you get. First, it is difficult to implement what you have in your mind. And what is more, many new ideas will come up during the drawing procedure. It’s a good thing since creation always relies on inspiration. But at the same time, there are many rational factors you need to take into account, such as perspective, the representation of quality and picture content. The basic principles should always be taken care of while drawing, and only the combination of perceptual and rational thoughts can lead to best works.
